I was leery of a rain barrel too... living in Florida ..mosquitos etc... but this article really made it look simple and I think the positives outweigh my concerns... we're going to give it a go

I have a rain barrel in the front of my house. I swear its true that plants prefer rain water to tap water. I want to get one in my back yard, too, I just have to figure out where I am going to put it. The one in my front yard fits right between my porch and my neighbors porch (townhouse) so you can't even see it. I actually catch some of her rain water, too.
